Overlooking Lake Maggiore, with a private beach enjoying absolute privacy, Villa Ada Troubetzkoy was built around 1866 by botanist Pyotr Troubetzkoy for his family. One of Pyotr’s sons, Paolo Troubetzkoy, became an internationally renowned sculptor (the Troubetzkoy Museum exists in Pallanza). Today that villa has been put up for sale by Italy Sotheby’s Realty International. Over the years, guests include actress Eleonora Duse, painter Daniele Ranzoni, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, painter Tranquillo Cremona, sculptor Giuseppe Grandi, and composer Alfredo Catalani.
The villa has nine bedrooms and ten bathrooms, making 900 square meters in size. The bright living room, music room, kitchen, and dining room are on the ground floor. The park covers 23,000 square meters, enhanced by palm trees and a remarkable winter garden, originally an orangery and lemon house, now a place to relax with a fireplace and a wood-burning oven.
On the second floor are the master bedroom, a 90 sq m terrace overlooking the lake, and two apartments with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. The same equipment is provided for the four apartments on the second floor and the mini apartment on the attic floor.

The geographical breakdown of Italy Sotheby’s Realty International’s clientele in the Lake Maggiore area is Denmark (30 percent), Germany (26 percent), the U.S. (25 percent), the Netherlands, and Switzerland (10 percent). Summer is the busiest period, with July and August the peak months.
